This trail starts out on the old Western & Atlantic railroad bed, which is the railroad that ran through the pass during the Civil War.   The trail turns right on to a section of the Old Tennessee Road and is very well marked.  Please take the time to stop and read the interpretive signs.  These signs will help you get a sense of the bloody battle that took place here in October of 1864.  The trail winds atop the Oak-Pine ridges as well as around and through the earthen works of a battle fought long ago.  These earthen works are very old, dating to 1864 and extremely important to the history of the area.  Please be respectful of them so that they will be enjoyed well in to the future.
